Good morning, everyone. As you know, this 'careers day' is designed to give you the chance to find out a bit more about the world of work. You'll hear from speakers where to look for job (1) vacancies, how to prepare for job (2) interviews and what salaries you can expect to (3) earn in different positions. There's also advice about things like getting bank accounts and paying (4) tax. I'm your first speaker and I'm here to talk to you a bit about my work (5) experience and tell you some of the things I've learned. I'm a (6) journalist. I write articles for different newspapers and magazines. Some of my (7) colleagues have (8) permanent jobs with one newspaper or magazine. They like the security. Also, they have the chance to get (9) promotion and their (10) income is regular. What's more, they know that when they retire, they will get a good. (11) pension However, I prefer to be a (12) freelancer and not to work for one (13) boss. I like the excitement of going anywhere to find a story. And when it is accepted by a paper, it's a very (14) rewarding feeling! But it's taken me a long time to get to this position. I didn't know when I was younger that I wanted to do this for a (15) living. When I left university after getting a degree in English, I couldn't find a job. My local restaurant was taking (16) on extra staff for the summer and they (17) offered me the job of a waiter. It was only (18) part-time but I earned enough salary (including (19) tips from happy customsers) to take a holiday in Cyprus. While I was there, I wrote some articles about the country and sent them to a travel magazine. They liked them and I just carried on from there. In the beginning, it wasn't a very (20) highly paid job, but it's got a lot better! I love my job and that's the most important thing.
