The subculture of punks appeared in 1970s in the United States, Australia and the United Kingdom. It was greatly influenced by anarchism, the Sex Pistols, nihilism, Marxism, pop art and other movements. Punk literature originates from the depiction of the street youth by Charles Dickens, and Jim Carroll’s book The Basketball Diaries is the first example of such a literature.

The ideology of punks is rather contradictory. There are many subgroups in this subculture, the representatives of which have diverse views on life. But according to the most common point of view punks are defined as left-wing and progressive in politics. They also stick to the principles of anarchism, individualism, anti-militarism, socialism, anti-capitalism, anti-racism, anti-nationalism, anti-sexism, hemophilia, environmentalism, veganism, vegetarianism, and animal rights. But there are individuals in punk subculture, who are completely apolitical and even have neo-Nazi views. Each punk must share the ideology of the subculture, as the person, who prefers only the style of the subculture, is called "poseur".
